Siri, find me a job: Recruitment and AI

Modern day recruitment is a weird and wonderful thing. Recruitment and hiring, at their core very human-centric processes, are becoming alarmingly automated. With the job market becoming ever-more competitive, companies are increasingly turning to automation, which can speed-up the recruiting process by up to 30%. Siri, find me a job

Telling your phone “Siri/ Alexa/ Okay Google/, find me a job” or “jobs near me” will bring up a number of results, with varying degrees of relevance.

Apparently, “Siri, find me a job” brings up results of employment agencies, rather than job listings in companies directly. This could be a useful solution to turn to if you aren’t interested in searching on job boards yourself.

Specifying your industry will bring up companies near you specialising in your sector, but there’s no guarantee that these will be hiring or advertising vacancies. Siri won’t actually apply to jobs for you reportedly, but will suggest popular job boards instead.

ZipRecruiter app

This newly developed app for the Echo Home, using Amazon’s voice assistant Alexa, allows job application queries through the system. This system already allows users to pay bills and book flights through the device using voice recognition, so job hunting via Alexa presumably is just the next logical step.

The app recognises commands such as “Alexa, tell ZipRecruiter, I hate my boss”, which prompts a response from the robot about starting a job search.

The app’s creators say it was intended to give a more human voice to the online recruitment process, even if it is automated and using powerful AI.

Google for Jobs

Nowadays, you don’t even have to delve any deeper than the first page of Google to find job adverts in your industry, tailor your search and apply. Google for Jobs was rolled out earlier this year in the USA and has already made a splash in the online recruitment world.

According to Google, the Jobs function works by using “AI machine learning to understand how job titles and skills relate to one another and what job content, location, and seniority are the closest match to a jobseeker’s preferences.”

The API can be purchased by companies to help them recruit better candidates on their job boards and websites.

Now, when a jobseeker searches for a job directly through Google, Google’s AI algorithms sorts through job opportunities for this person based on location, brands they connect and engage with on social media, Google search history and industries and roles based on experience.

Then it will bring up a list of results from across the web, which include the company’s name, the role, the hours and when the job was posted.

So, does this shift in recruitment media and methods spell danger for traditional online job boards? Only time will tell. Some aspects of the recruitment process need a human touch, and surely there is only so much that can be powered by AI. But suffice it to say that your friendly mobile phone robot is capable of more that you can imagine. Even if it may not become your next boss, it may just lead you to them.
