Jobboard Finder’s opinion
Summary: Since 1997, CareerJunction has been present in South Africa. It was created by TBG (Tiso Blackstar Group), which specialises in media and marketing and used to be known as Johnnic Communications, Avusa and then Times Media Group until it became TBG in 2017. In 2015, the generalist job board was sold to SaonGroup, which belongs to StepStone, which in turn belongs to Axel Springer. StepStone also owns Pnet, the other large generalist job board in South Africa, but the two have not merged as of yet. Both are quite popular: CareerJunction attracts 1.48 million views (about 500 000 views less than Pnet) every month and keeps its social media updated. There are 122 followers on YouTube, 59 200 on Twitter, 6 032 on LinkedIn and 65 461 on Facebook.
Design: The CareerJunction homepage is relatively minimalistic: there is a search engine (keywords and location), categories and locations to choose from, popular searches and a link to different salary reports. There are also featured companies (most of which are recruiting). Once in the job listing, the filters (location, category, job type, employment equity, job level, salary, job posted, company type) appear on the left-hand side and include the number of jobs per category. You can sort the offers by relevance, newness or salary. Publication dates and logos are visible in the listing. Companies don’t really have pages or profiles, but rather they lead to a list of job offers.
The job board objective: CareerJunction helps jobseekers and recruiters find each other in South Africa.
Recruiter observations: The prices are online and you can order your adverts through the site, but a postal address and VAT number are required.
Jobseeker observations: The first step of creating an account is uloading your CV. Then, the website extracts as much as it can to fill in the online CV. However, everything, which could not be put directly into the CV must be reviewed and all the fields are required to complete the account. You must include your ethnicity, disabilities (if any), language skills, ID (if any) and driver’s licence (if any). To apply to job offers, cover letters are required.
The job offers: Currently, there are 6 535 job offers online. Most of them are in IT and business and management.
Reactivity: There are many e-mail addresses to choose from. The team answers very quickly.
Special features: The blog; the salary and industry reviews; the YouTube videos; the CV parser; the list of partner websites and sister sites.
Verdict: CareerJunction has good visibility and an easy-to-use interface. If you are recruiting in South Africa, you can’t really go wrong with CareerJunction.
